A picture list of Hydrocarbons and Derivatives to memorize for OChem success
Alkynes (CnH2n-2) Contains a CC triple bond. Also an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
Alkanes (CnH2n+2) Contains only single bonds. Also called saturated hydrocarbons.
Alkenes (CnH2n) Contains at least one double bond. Also called unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Aromatics / Benzene ring. Can only have those 3 double bonds, no less. Can also have other substituents, like Nitrogen, on the ring, as long as the alternating single double bond pattern is maintained.
Primary Alcohol. Where an alkane is replaced by a hydroxyl (OH) group.
Secondary Alcohol. Where an alkane is replaced by a hydroxyl (OH) group.
Tertiary Alcohol. Where an alkane is replaced by a hydroxyl (OH) group.
Phenol Alcohol. Where an alkane is replaced by a hydroxyl (OH) group. Has the hydroxyl group directly attached to an aromatic ring / benzene ring.
