Physical Property
A characteristic of a substance that can be determined without changing its composition.
Qualitative Physical Property
A property that can be observed without measurement, such as colour or texture.
Quantitative Physical Property
A property that can be measured and expressed numerically, such as mass and length.
Lustre
The shininess or dullness of a substance.
Optical Clarity
The ability of a substance to allow light to pass through.
Brittleness
The property of a substance that indicates its breakability or flexibility.
Viscosity
The ability of a substance to flow or pour readily.
Hardness
The relative ability to scratch or be scratched by another substance.
Malleability
The ability of a substance to be hammered into a thinner sheet or molded.
Ductility
The ability of a substance to be drawn (pulled) into a finer strand.
Electrical Conductivity
The ability of a substance to allow an electric current to pass through it.
Physical Change
A change in which the composition of the substance remains unaltered and no new substances are produced.
Example of Physical Change
Melting ice, folding a piece of paper, or mixing sugar into coffee.
