C6 - Electrolysing 2 Different aqueous solutions using inert electrodes

Step 1

Pour approximately 50 cm³ copper (II) chloride solution into the beaker

Step 2

Add petri dish lid and insert the carbon rods through holes and rods must not touch each other

Step 3

Attach crocodile leads to rods. Connect rods to DC terminals of a low voltage power supply

Step 4

Select 4V on the power supply and switch on then record initial observations in table below

Step 5

Use forceps to hold a piece of blue litmus paper in the solution next to the anode

Step 6

Rinse the electrochemical cell apparatus and collect a new set of electrodes and repeat steps using other solution of sodium chloride
