LAN Characteristics:

Private network, no outside control.

Higher speed than WAN systems.

Homogeneous network.

Various MAC methods.

LAN Advantages:

Shared computer resources, reducing hardware costs.

Same software can be used across the network, instead of multiple licenses.

Centralized data storage.

Easy transfer of data and messages between computers.

Easier data management.

Shared internet connection for all users.

LAN Disadvantages:

High initial setup cost.

LAN admin can access users' personal data, bad for privacy.

Security risk of unauthorized access.

Requires constant administration for software and hardware issues.

WAN Characteristics:

Connects offices over large distances.

Enables global integrated network.

Heterogeneous network.

WAN Advantages:

Covers larger geographical area.

Contains many devices like phone, laptop, etc.

WLAN support using radio transmitters.

WAN Disadvantages:

High initial setup cost.

Difficult to maintain, requiring skilled staff.

More errors and issues due to varied technologies.

Longer issue resolution time due to different technologies.

Lower security than other networks.

MAN Characteristics:

Covers towns/cities up to 50 km.

Uses optical fiber, cables, or wireless links.

Data rates suitable for distributed computing.

MAN Advantages:

Fast communication with fiber optics.

Supports large networks and access to WANs.

Dual bus enables simultaneous data transmission.

Covers parts or entire cities.

MAN Disadvantages:

More cabling required to connect locations.

Difficult to secure from hackers.

PAN Characteristics:

Personal device network in a small area.

Connects personal devices like phones, tablets, etc.

Can be wirelessly connected via WPAN.

PAN Advantages:

Relatively secure and safe.

Short-range, up to 10 meters.

Restricted to a small area.

PAN Disadvantages:

Possible interference with other networks in the same radio bands.

Distance limits.

Advantages of Peer to Peer Network

Use less expensive computer hardware.

Easy to administer.

No NOS required.

More built-in redundancy.

Easy set and low cost.

Disadvantages of Peer to Peer Network

Not very secure.

No central point of storage or file archiving.

Additional load on computer because of resource sharing.

Hard to maintain version control.

Advantages of Client/Server

Very secure.

Better performance.

Centralized backup.

Very reliable.

Disadvantages of Client/Server

Requires professional administration.

More hardware-intensive.

More software-intensive.

Expensive dedicated software.
