What is respiration?
A chemical process in cells that releases energy from glucose to produce ATP.
Occurs continuously in living cells.
Role of ATP
ATP provides energy for:
active transport
muscle contraction
protein synthesis
cell division
Aerobic respiration word equation
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water (+ energy)
Balanced aerobic respiration equation
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
Anaerobic respiration in animals
Glucose → Lactic acid (+ small energy release)
Occurs when oxygen supply is insufficient.
Anaerobic respiration in plants & yeast
Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
(fermentation)
Differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic | Anaerobic |
|---|---|
Uses oxygen | No oxygen |
Large energy release | Small energy release |
Products CO₂ + H₂O | Lactic acid / ethanol |
Occurs in mitochondria | Cytoplasm |
