What is master cylinder?

• convert mechanical force from the driver’s foot into hydraulic pressure.

• The pressure generated is used to produce force at the wheels to apply the friction members

• A leak anywhere in the system would make the entire system inoperative.

What material does master cylinder piston and the body used?

• the body and piston of the master cylinder are aluminum.

• In some cases the body aswell, are anodized to protect them from corrosion.

What is the primary seal?

This seal holds high pressure fluid in front of the piston.

What is the secondary seal?

• Prevents air or dirt from entering the system.

Brake hydraulic seals are made from?

• ethylenepropylene, a rubber compound which remains flexible at low temperatures.

• The material swell and break down ifbit comes in contact with engine oil, grease and fuel.

Tandem master cylinder (Design)

• have two pistons; a primary and secondary.

• If a failure occurs in one circuit, the other circuit still operates some of the brakes on the vehicle. The circuit may be split front and rear or diagonally.

Material for master cylinder?

• made pf aluminum with a plastic reservoir attached or connected via flexible tubing.

Operation of master cylinder?

• when forced is applied to the primary piston it operates exactly as the single master cylinder.

• Does jot start to build useable pressure until it has applied the secondary piston past it’s ven port.

If hydraulic failure occurs in the primary of the hydraulic system, fluid is only lost from the primary circuit. As the pedal is applied

What is a wheel cylinder?

The wheel cylinder are an output component of the drum brake system.

They change fluid pressure to the mechanical motion and force required to apply the friction member atvyhe wheel on a drum brake system.

Operation of master cylinder

When the driver applies the brake pedal, the push rod moved the piston forward. As soon as the promary cup seal passed the vent port, the fluid in front of the piston is trapped, forming a continuous flown of brake fluid to the wheel cylinder.

Operation of wheel cylinder?

Wheel cylinder for drum brakes assemblies attach to the brake backing plates and connect with the master cylinder via a steel brake fluid line. Brake fluid bleed screw positioned above the fluid line allows you to purge air from the brake system.

what is a disc brake calipers?

It converts hydraulic pressure produced by the master cylinder into mechanical force. The caliepr use that force to squeeze the brake padd against the rotors, creating friction and slowing the vehicle.

Fixed caliper operation?

When pressurebis applier to the system, the pistons of the fixed caliper are forced toward the the rotor.

Steel lines

Tubing used in brake system is doubled wrappedx seamless steel, annealed to make it workable for bending. A tin coating provide corrosion resistance.

Flex lines

Flexible brake hoses are used where there is movement of a wheel or axle to which the brake assembly is attached.

Pressure differential valve

The pressure differential valve activates a warning light or display to alert driver of a failure of either of the two brake hydraulic.

Senses any difference in pressure between the two halves of the hydraulic sustem

Metering valve

Metering valves are used where on some vehicle that have front disc and rear drums.

The valve delays application of the front brakes until the drum brakes have sufficient pressure to overcome the return spring and take up any clearance between the drums and the linings.

Proportioning valve

• regulates rear drums pressure during moderate to hard braking.

• This is done to preventing premature rear wheel lock up.
