Tawhid (The Oneness of Allah)
The core belief in Islamic faith that there is only one God. Quote: 'Say, He is God the One, God the eternal. He begot no one nor was He begotten. No one is comparable to Him' (Surah 112:1-4).
The Six Articles of Faith (Sunni Islam)
The six foundational beliefs for Sunni Muslims: 1. Tawhid, 2. Angels (Malaikah), 3. Holy Books (Kutub), 4. Prophethood (Risalah), 5. Day of Judgment (Akhirah), and 6. Predestination (Al-Qadr).
The Five Roots of Usul ad-Din (Shi'a Islam)
The five core principles of Shi'a Islam: 1. Tawhid, 2. Divine Justice (Adalat), 3. Prophethood (Nubuwwah), 4. Authority of the Imams (Imamate), and 5. Day of Resurrection (Ma'ad).
Malaikah (Angels)
Beings created from light to serve Allah and act as messengers. Quote: 'They do not disobey Allah's commands in that which He has commanded them, but do as they are commanded' (Surah 66:6).
Risalah (Prophethood)
The process of communication between Allah and humans via prophets. Quote: 'Every community is sent a messenger' (Surah 10:47) and 'Muhammad is… the Seal of the Prophets' (Surah 33:40).
Al-Qadr (Predestination)
The belief that Allah has decreed everything that happens in the universe. Quote: 'Only what God has decreed will happen to us' (Surah 9:51).
Akhirah (The Afterlife)
The belief in life after death and the final reckoning. Quote: 'Every soul shall taste death' (Surah 3:185) and 'He will give life to the dead' (Surah 30:50).
Kutub (Holy Books)
The scriptures revealed by Allah to guide humanity. Quote: 'This is the Scripture in which there is no doubt, containing guidance for those who are mindful of God' (Surah 2:2).
Adalat (Divine Justice)
An essential part of Allah's nature, meaning He is always fair. Quote: 'God does not wrong people at all, but it is the people who wrong themselves' (Surah 10:44).
Jibril (Archangel)
The archangel who revealed the Quran to Muhammad and is the messenger of Allah. Quote: 'He has brought the Qur'an down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission of Allah' (Surah 2:97).
Mika'il (Archangel)
The archangel of mercy who is responsible for rain, thunder, and providing nourishment for the earth. Quote: 'Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Jibril and Mika'il - then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers' (Surah 2:98).
Ibrahim (Prophet Abraham)
A key prophet known for his monotheism and for rebuilding the Ka'bah. Quote: 'Who could be better in religion than those who submit themselves wholly to God… and follow the religion of Abraham, who was true in faith? God took Abraham as a friend' (Surah 4:125).
Muhammad (The Seal of the Prophets)
The final prophet to whom the Quran was revealed, completing the line of messengers. Quote: 'Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets' (Surah 33:40).
The Imamate (Shi'a Islam)
The Shi'a belief in twelve divinely appointed leaders (Imams) from the lineage of Muhammad who provide spiritual and political guidance. Quote: 'And We made them leaders, guiding by Our command' (Surah 21:73).
Barzakh (The Intermediate State)
A state of waiting or a barrier between this world and the hereafter where the soul remains until the Day of Judgment. Quote: 'And behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected' (Surah 23:100).
Jannah (Paradise)
The eternal reward of heaven for those who have lived a righteous life. Quote: 'They will be given a drink of pure wine' (Surah 83:25) and will 'dwell in gardens of delight' (Surah 56:12).
Jahannam (Hell)
A place of eternal punishment for those who have rejected God and done evil. Quote: 'They will dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water in the shadow of black smoke' (Surah 56:42-43).
Adam (The First Prophet)
The first human being and the first prophet, created from clay to be Allah's vicegerent on earth. Quote: 'He taught Adam all the names [of things]' (Surah 2:31).

The scrolls revealed to Ibrahim and Musa. Quote: 'This is in the former scrolls, the scrolls of Abraham and Moses' (Surah 87:18-19).
The Sunni and Shi'a Split
The division over leadership after Prophet Muhammad's death. Sunnis believe Abu Bakr was the rightful successor, while Shi'as believe Ali was appointed by Allah. Quote: 'Of whomsoever I am Lord, then Ali is also his Lord' (Hadith of Ghadir Khumm).
