what is bilateral balanced occlusion?
simultaneous, anterior, and posterior occlusal contact of teeth in centric and eccentric positions
what is unilateral balanced occlusion?
occlusal surfaces of teeth on only one side occlude simultaneously with a smooth, uninterrupted glide
what is mutually protected occlusion?
multiple simultaneous occlusal contacts on all teeth that adequately distributes forces; posterior tooth contacts should dominate over anterior teeth
what is the goal for equilibration of the fixed dentoform in centric?
even posterior contacts on both right and left sides of the dentoform and both maxillary canines contacting either the mandibular canine or first premolar
what is the goal for equilibration of the fixed dentoform in eccentric movements?
anterior guidance with no posterior teeth interferences in the right/left lateral movements or in protrusive movements
what is the minimum contacts for all projects on the fixed dentoform?
one posterior centric contact on each side of the dentoform holding shimstock, both maxillary canines holding shimstock with opposing teeth in centric and eccentric, no posterior interferences in eccentric
what is centric relation?
maxillomandibular relationship in which the condyles articulate with the thinnest avascular portion of their respective disks with the complex in the anterior-superior position against the shapes of the articular eminencies
what is centric occlusion?
the voluntary position of the dentition that allows the maximum contact when the teeth occlude
what is maximum intercuspation?
complete intercuspation of the opposing teeth independent of condylar position
what are the functional cusps of maxillary posterior teeth?
lingual
what are the non-functional cusps of maxillary posterior teeth?
buccal
what are the functional cusps of mandibular posterior teeth?
buccal
what are the non-functional cusps of mandibular posterior teeth?
lingual
what are the muscles of mastication?
masseter, temporalis, medial/lateral pterygoid
when is the lateral pterygoid active in mastication?
opening and closing, moving horizontally
when is the inferior belly of the lateral pterygoid active?
protrusion, depression and lateral movements
when is the superior belly of the lateral pterygoid active?
closure
how is the TMJ described?
ginglymoarthroidal joint
what are the major components of the TMJ?
cranial base, mandible, muscles of mastication
is the articular disc vascular?
no
what type of movement is the mandible capable of in the sagittal plane?
rotational
what are closure stoppers?
interocclusal contacts stopping hinge closure of mandible as it centrically relates to the maxilla that offset forces exerted by equalizers
where are closure stoppers located?
distal inclines of maxillary posterior teeth and mesial inclines of mandibular posterior teeth
what are equalizers?
interocclusal contacts that offset forces exerted by closure stoppers and gain M-D stability
where are equalizers located?
mesial inclines of maxillary posterior teeth and distal inclines of mandibular posterior teeth
how is an "A" occlusal contact described?
contacts occurring between maxillary non-functional cusps and mandibular functional cusps
how is a "B" occlusal contact described?
contacts occurring between maxillary functional cusps and mandibular functional cusps
how is a "C" occlusal contact described?
contacts occurring between maxillary functional cusps and mandibular non-functional cusps
which cusp does the maxillary canine-first premolar fossae contact in the tooth-to-two-tooth occlusion?
mandibular first premolar buccal cusp
which cusp does the maxillary first premolar-second premolar fossae contact in the tooth-to-two-tooth occlusion?
mandibular second premolar buccal cusp
which cusp does the maxillary second premolar-first molar fossae contact in the tooth-to-two-tooth occlusion?
mandibular first molar mesial-buccal/buccal cusps
which cusp does the mandibular first premolar-second premolar fossae contact in the tooth-to-two-tooth occlusion?
maxillary first premolar lingual cusp
which cusp does the mandibular second premolar-first molar fossae contact in the tooth-to-two-tooth occlusion?
maxillary second premolar lingual cusp
