A grave in the front yard; with Dallas

Dallas: The ground is so darn hard and dry and hot I can’t get a shovel into it.

Well, goodness, we don’t want a grave right in the front yard anyhow.

Dallas: I have tried everywhere. It’s no use.

I guess there isn’t anything we can do.

Dallas: I’m not gonna just sit here. I’m going into the Well and I’m bringing back water.

Water’s gone deeper, honey.

Dallas: I don’t care if I have to explore around in there for weeks.

What if there is no more water at all, Columbus?

Dallas: I don’t care, and besides, you don’t know that.

Yes, I do, Laurie Laurie told me.

Dallas: I hate to say it, but she’s turned into a terrible liar since she died.

Listen, eventually something’ll work out and Laurie Laurie’ll go away. And one of these days old Pheenie will stroll back, and P.S. Monty Lou is *not* going to die of dehydration.

Dallas: What if she *does*? What if we all do?

You getting lost in the well forever is going to help that?

Dallas: How much water would I need to bring back, do you think? Much?

If you think we all need treatment.

Dallas: I’ve been planning and I have some ideas.

Like?

Dallas: Do you think maybe I should bring him a present of some kind?

Who?

Dallas: The Well.

A present?

Dallas: So he wouldn’t hurt me, you know, take anything.

How would you know what he’d like?

Dallas: I thought I could maybe bake him something.

You want to be baking in this kind of heat?

Dallas: We still have that fruitcake from Aunt Boo, it still has the bow on it.

You think I’m gonna let you walk in to Well carrying a fruitcake with a bow on it?

Dallas: Monty is dying…and anyway…

Anyway what?

Dallas: I feel like I kind of want to go.

Are you crazy?

Dallas: I feel it.

Are you out of your mind?

Dallas: I feel like somebody’s-calling me in there.

Nobody but Monty Lou. She has a power like that.

Dallas: I keep thinking I hear something calling, something crying. Down in the Well.

You do not.

Dallas: I kind of want to go see what it is. I think I can help-

Each step you take deeper is more dangerous.

Dallas: I know.

Each step you take you risk more. And more.

Dallas: I know it.

At any moment, on any step, the Well may take over you and you won’t be able to breathe and you’ll black out.

Dallas: Yes-

And if you’re stopped before you’ve gone too far, you wake up on the field with something missing.
