• >1000 yo breed, originated in a Belgian monastery

• Originally used to track game

• 1066: Norman invasion → brought across the Channel, became the nobility’s dog

• Nowadays used as police dogs to track missing people

• Kind, gentle, loving

• Single-minded, persistent

• Smell-oriented

• Need regular exercise

• Pack animals

• Long, large head, square profile

• Supple, thin, loose skin, deep folds and winkles on forehead and cheeks

• Deep-set eyes, slack eyelid

• Long, falling ears

• Pendulous lips

• Tail carried straight

• Height: ♂ 63.5-68.5 cm - ♀ 58.5-63.5 cm
  Weight: ♂ 41-54 kg - ♀ 36-48 kg
  Coat: short, smooth, close-lying, weatherproof or harsh
  Colour: black and tan, liver and tan; red, may have white markings
