Motivating Operations (MO)
Antecedents that change the value of consequences and temporarily evoke or abate behavior.
Abolishing Operation
A type of MO that decreases the effectiveness or value of a reinforcer.
Establishing Operation
A type of MO that increases the effectiveness or value of a reinforcer.
Evocative Effect
An increase in the likelihood of a behavior due to an increase in the value of a consequence.
Abative Effect
A decrease in the likelihood of a behavior due to a decrease in the value of a consequence.
Deprivation
A state that increases the value of a reinforcer due to its absence.
Satiation
A state that decreases the value of a reinforcer due to its excess.
Current Behavior
Behavior that is influenced by the motivating operations occurring at that time.
Contingency of MO
The relationship between the motivating operation, discriminative stimulus, behavior, and consequence.
Behavioral Altering
The effect of the motivating operation on the likelihood of a specific behavior occurring.
Reinforcer
A consequence that increases the likelihood of a behavior when accessed.
Punisher
A consequence that decreases the likelihood of a behavior when experienced.
Four-term contingency
The interaction of MOs, SDs, behaviors, and consequences that influences behavior.
Behavior Analyst
A professional who studies and applies concepts of behavior analysis to influence behavior change.
Behavioral Fluctuations
Changes in behavior due to varying motivational states and their effects.
Simplification in ABA
The process of understanding complex behavioral concepts in straightforward terms.
