Riel sheltered in Dakota territory after the arrival of Wolseleys troops. Violence & threats against the métis kept him away
1871 Fenian Raid
may 3 1871, riel returns to red river, helps marshal metis cavalry to defend against debian raid. (irish nationalist society dedicated to irish in dependance from imperial britain)canadian officials thought metis might join, but they rather offered to fight against outsiders.
U.S cavalry ended up being ordered to stop the “raid” to prevent any embarrassing incidents from occurring along the border

left with riel from manitoba in 1871, was eventually arrested and charged with murder of thomas scott. was originally sentenced to hang, but later commuted to 2 years in prison + forfeiture of civil rights
riel elected in exile
he was elected to parliament 3 times as a member of the conservative party but never took his seat due to $5000 bounty on his head
Legacy of Terror
Wolseleys troops made Metis people feel like strangers in their own home. crimes such as lynching, hanging, and more went unreported in bulk amounts. the reign of terror lasted over 2 years in the red river
