Zygote
the single cell organism formed when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell
marks the very first stage of human development
contains a complete set of chromosomes (46 humans) from both parents
the zygote immediately begins to divide and develop into multicellular organism
Blastocyst
stage of early development in humans + all mammals that consist of an inner call mass (which become the embryo) and an outer layer (which becomes the placenta)
Implantation
process in which a blastocyst attaches itself to the wall of uterus
embryo
early stage of human development that begins after implantation of blastocyst into the uterine wall and lasts through the 8th weeks of gestations

The supreme court used the trimester framework to define how states can regulate abortion, essentially legalizing it nationwide within limits. Based on 14th amendment right to due process clause.
Planned parenthood V. Casey (1992)
states can regulate abortion, but not with regulations that impose “undue burden” upon women, did not overturn Roe V. Wade
gave states more leeway in regulating abortion (24 hour waiting period, parental consent for minors)
