Hindsight Bias
People's tendency to overestimate their ability to predict the outcome of events.
Basic Research
Research concerned with trying to understand a phenomenon in its own right.
Applied Research
Research aimed at solving real-world problems.
Hypothesis
A prediction about what will happen under particular circumstances.
Causality
The relationship between cause and effect.
Independent Variable (IV)
The variable that is hypothesized to be the cause of a particular outcome.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The variable that is hypothesized to be affected by the manipulation of the independent variable.
Random Assignment
Assigning participants to different groups randomly to ensure each group is comparable.
External Validity
The degree to which results from a study can be generalized to real-world situations.
Internal Validity
The confidence that only the manipulated variable could have produced the results of an experiment.
Reliability
The degree to which measurements are consistent over time.
Validity
The extent to which a test measures what it intends to measure.
Informed Consent
The process of obtaining permission from participants after they have been informed of all aspects of the research.
Deception Research
Research in which participants are misled about the purpose or nature of the study.
Spurious Correlation
A false correlation between two variables due to the influence of a third variable.
