Working Safely with Animals What are potential hazards associated with animal work and zoonotic diseases? (What is a zoonotic diseases????)
Physical Injuries
Hazardous agent exposure
Allergies
Equipment injuries
Zoonotic disease: an infectious disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans or humans to animals
What regulations are there for research animals?
Welfare policy: assurance of humane care and ethical use of animals in research
Why is it dangerous to work with animals?
You can get hurt, or exposed to hazardous agents
How are allergies related to working with animals?
Can develop over time, exposure by inhalation, direct contact, sweat, urine, saliva, and dander
What are the causes of diseases (examples of biological agents & methods)
Agents: Bacterial, fungal, parasitic, viral
Methods: Direct, Indirect, Vector, Foodborne, Waterborne
Explain rabies
rabies: infectious contagious and zoonotic, spread by animal bites/body fluid exposure, fever, headache, hydrophobia, death, treat by immediate wound treatment and post exposure vaccine
Zoonoses at Rutgers (chickens, pigs, sheep, lambs, cattle, wildlife)
Chickens: salmonella
Pigs: E coli, Erysipelas
Sheep: Q fever
Lambs: Orf
Cattle: Ringworm
Wildlife: Rabies
Disease prevention (remember how many times Dr. Reimer mentioned hand washing!)
Keep vaccinations current, don’t wear work/farm clothing home, wash hands, no eating or drinking in animal areas
Why is working safely with animals important?
To keep diseases low, prevent physical injuries, and protect yourself
Explain Seoul virus
seoul virus: in HANTAVIRUS family, transmitted by rats, transmitted by feces, saliva, urine, or dust from nests/beddings
Explain orf
orf: sore mouth, lesions around body openings, transmitted through direct contact, prevent by wearing gloves and washing hands
Explain Q fever
Q fever: source of birth fluid, highly infectious, sudden onset, high fever, muscle and abdominal aches, wear ppe, can recover w/o treatment
Explain toxoplasmosis
toxoplasmosis: cats eat infected prey resulting in this, transmission in ingestion, prevent by cooking cat food and no outdoor hunting, and avoid cat litter, bad for pregnant women
