Nationalism
Loyalty and devotion to a nation; a feeling of national pride and unity.
Conscription
Compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the armed forces.
Standard Language
A language variety used by a population for public discourse.
Kulturkampf
German policies in relation to secularity and reducing the role of religious organizations in public life.
Russification
A form of cultural assimilation process during which non-Russian communities, voluntarily or not, give up their culture and language in favor of the Russian one.
Dreyfus Affair
A political scandal that divided France in the 1890s and early 1900s, involving the wrongful conviction of a Jewish army officer for treason.
Scientific Racism
The pseudoscientific belief that empirical evidence exists to support or justify racism, racial inferiority, or racial superiority.
Imagined Community
A concept coined by Benedict Anderson to analyze nationalism. Anderson argues that a nation is a socially constructed community, imagined by the people who perceive themselves as part of that group.
