What does VQ mismatch mean?
imbalance between ventilation and perfusion = inefficient gas exchange
What is ventilation?
air that reaches alveoli in the lungs
What is perfusion?
blood that reaches the alveoli via the pulmonary capillaries
= uptake of o2 and removal of co2
What are the causes of VQ mismatch?
pulmonary embolism - blockage in pulmonary artery = reduced perfusion to part of lung = areas that are ventilated but not perfused (high V/Q ratio)
COPD - areas of lung poorly ventilated due to airway obstruction = areas perfused but not well ventilated (low VQ ratio)
pneumonia - infection in lungs = fluid + inflam cells to fill alveoli = impairing ventilation (low VQ ratio)
What are the consequences of VQ mismatch?
hypoxaemia
hypercapnia
