Frontal Bone
An unpaired bowl-shaped bone located in the forehead region. It contributes in forming the anterior part of the skull.
Parietals Bones
Located on each side of the skull right behind the frontal bone. Both parietal bones together form most of the calvaria.
Occipital Bone
A single bone of the skull that consists of four parts surrounding the foramen magnum.
Foramen magnum - The largest opening in the skull. Its main function is to serve as a passage for the structures of the central nervous system through the skull, connecting the brain with the spinal cord.
Occipital condyles - A single rounded projection that is present on the rear of the skull and articulates with the first cervical (neck) vertebra. Functionally, it allows the head to move from side to side, up and down, as well as to rotate.
Temporal Bones
A paired bone situated at the lateral side and base of the skull. (ie. ears)
Mastoid Process - An extension of the temporal bone located behind the ear, just posterior to the external acoustic opening. Many muscles of the neck attach to this process.
External Auditory Meatus - The outside opening to the ear.
Styloid Process - A slender sharp projection of the temporal bone.
Sphenoid Bone
A single bone that lies in the base of the skull between the frontal, temporal and occipital bones.
Ethmoid Bones
An unpaired bone of the skull that contributes to the medial wall of the orbit and parts of the nasal cavity.
Cribriform Plate - A part of the ethmoid bone situated in the horizontal plane. It covers the ethmoidal notch of the frontal bone. The cribriform plate forms the roof of the nasal cavity.
Olfactory Foramina - The cribriform plate of the ethmoid features small openings.
Nasal Bone
Paired bone forming the anterior wall of the nasal cavity and is largely responsible for the shape of the nose.
Lacrimal Bone
The smallest and the thinnest bone of the skull. It is a paired bone that lies anteriorly in the medial wall of each orbit.
Zygomatic/Cheek Bone
A paired facial bone situated in the upper lateral part of the face. This bone participates in creating the prominence of the cheek.
Maxilla Bone
A paired bone of the facial skeleton. The two maxillary bones (maxillae) are fused to form the upper jaw.
Infraorbital Foramen - One of two small holes in the skull's upper jawbone (maxillary bone), located below the eye socket.
Mandible Bone
As the only movable bone of the skull and the largest, strongest facial bone. It is a single bone connected to the skull by the temporomandibular joint. The mandible forms the lower jaw and houses the lower or mandibular teeth.
Mental Foramen - An opening in the lower jawbone located below the second premolar tooth.
Coronoid Process - The very top of the mandible bone.
Mandibular Condyle - Is the unpaired, thick, curved horizontal portion of the mandible that houses the teeth.
Hyoid Bone
A single "U" shaped bone situated in the anterior part of the neck between the chin and the thyroid cartilage. The hyoid bone is attached to the skull with the help of ligaments.
Vomer Bone
An unpaired midline bone of the skull. Along with the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone the vomer forms the bony nasal septum.
