Cast
A collective group of both actors and actresses who perform their own definitive roles in a play.
Narrator
A character or voice that provides commentary, background information, context, and reveals motivations.
Chorus
A group of performers who use song, dance, and narration to comment on a play's action and represent societal moral or emotional viewpoints.
Dramatic Irony
A device where the audience knows critical information that the characters do not, creating suspense, humor, or tragedy.
Satire
A technique that uses humor, irony, and exaggeration to expose, denounce, and criticize people, places, or things.
Dialogue
The spoken or written exchange between two or more characters that advances the plot, reveals character traits, and establishes relationships.
Aside
A short statement that the audience hears but the characters do not.
Soliloquy
A speech delivered by a character alone on stage, expressing their thoughts to the audience.
Monologue
A long drawn-out speech directed towards another character in the play.
Act
A major division within a play or dramatic work consisting of one or more scenes designed to advance the play.
Scene
A fundamental unit of drama that takes place in a specific place and time, often marked by changes in characters, dialogue, or actions.
Script
A document that comprises setting, characters, dialogue, and stage directions for a play.
Drama
A genre that tells a story through dialogue and actions that are performed by actors.
Playwright
A person who writes plays.
Character
A persona portrayed by an actor in plays.
Prop
Movable or portable objects handled or used by actors on stage.
Set
A scenic environment designed to set the mood of a play's action.
Stage Directions
Instructions in a play script that guide actors' movements.
Sophocles
An ancient Greek dramatist born around 497 BCE, known for his plays including Antigone.
Antigone
One of Sophocles' three tragedies that focus on the fate of the city-state Thebes during and after the reign of King Oedipus.
Palimpsests
A manuscript page, typically parchment or vellum, that has been scraped or washed clean of its original text.
