Object Distance

The distance from the mirror to the object.

Image Distance

The distance from the mirror to the image.

Positive Object Distance

When the object is on the same side of the reflecting or refracting surface as the incoming light.

Positive Image Distance

When the image is on the same side of the reflecting or refracting surface as the outgoing light.

Positive Radius of Curvature

When the center of curvature C is on the same side as the outgoing light.

Concave Mirror

A mirror with a reflecting surface that is an inward curve.

Convex Mirror

A mirror with a reflecting surface that is an outward curve.

Lateral Magnification

Expressed as m = hi/ho = -di/do

Mirror Equation

Expressed as 1/f = 1/do + 1/di

Convex (Diverging) Mirror

A mirror that is sometimes referred to as a diverging mirror because incident light originates from the same point and will reflect off the mirror surface and diverge.
