beliefs about the nature of god
“i am the lord your god, who brought you out of egypt, out of the land of slavery. you shall have no other gods before me” - christianity is a monotheistic religion and that their one god creates and sustains all that exists
god as ominpotent
“nothing is impossible with god” - when angel gabriel answered mary when she questioned her pregnancy. his omnipotence is benevolent
god as loving
“god so loved the world he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” - christians believe that god’s greatest act of love was sending god’s son to earth
bible’s definition of evil
“love is patient, love is kind. it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. it does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps not record of wrongs. love does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth. it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves. love never fails” - this definition suggests qualities that christians should aspire to. many christians recognise the importance attached to this description of love and have it read at their wedding ceremony
the first day of genesis
"in the beginning, god created the heavens and the earth. now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the spirit of god was hovering over the waters. and god said ‘let there be light’ and there was light” - while this may not scientifically accurate, the account contains religious truth explaining the creation process was gods choice and god designed and caused it to happen
