What are chemically gated channels
Chemically gated ion channels open when they bund specific chemicals such as the neurotransmitter acetylcholine
Most abundant where synaptic communication occurs (on the cell body and dendrites)
Graded potential depends on chemically gated ion channel
Once ACh dissolves or detaches, the channel will close.
What are Voltage-Gated Channels
Voltage-Gated channels
Voltage gated ion channels open or close in response to changes in membrane potential.
Capable of generating and spreading an action potential down the axon of the neuron.
The function independently. An activation gate opens on stimulation, letting sodium ions into the cell, and an inactivation gate closes to prevent the entry of sodium.
Located on the axon and the axon terminal
What is are mechanically gated channels
Mechanically gated ion channels open in response to mechanical stimuli that physically distort the neurons membrane surface
Important in sensory receptors that respond to stretch, pressure or vibration
Cause the sense of touch and hearing
