Dwight D. Eisenhower (Ike)
The presidential nominee for the republican party during the 1952 election and also a popular war hero. His slogans were "It's time for a change" and "I like Ike".
Adlai Stevenson
the democratic candidate who ran against Eisenhower in 1952.
"Dynamic Conservatism"
an approach that balances economic conservatism with activism in other areas. Under this approach Eisenhower ended government price and rent controls.
"Creeping Socialism"
Eisenhower called giving aid to businesses this… and then targeted the TVA and abolished the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.
"Atoms for Peace" speech
The name of the speech where Eisenhower pushed for the peaceful use of atomic energy while addressing the United Nations
Federal Highway Act/Interstate Highway System
created because people needed better roads for their cars. It was the largest public works program in American History and created more than 40,000 miles of roads.
St. Lawerence Seaway
a system that allowed ships to go from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean via a series of locks along the [vocab term]. Eisenhower accomplished this while the past three administrations had failed.
Air Pollution Control Act
passed to help investigate and control air pollution (though primary responsibility would fall to the states)

Residential areas that were mass produced during the 50s. Mainly for the middle class and very much only intended for white people

Redlining
a clause in the deed of suburban homes that prohibited reselling them to African Americans
Baby Boom
a marked rise in birthrate over a certain period of time, especially during the years following WWII (because the men came back from war, pregnancy and parenthood were celebrated, and the economy was stable) (our grandparents :) )
Poverty
apparent in the nation's urban centers during the 1950s because of redlining (the state of being severely poor)
Urban Renewal
government programs that attempt to eliminate poverty and revitalize urban areas
"Projects"
not sure if this is a vocab term or if I read it wrong but oh well. Things that did nothing to address the true issue of poverty and instead created an atmosphere of violence (and inadvertently supported poverty)
White-collar jobs
professional office jobs, named after the color of the dress shirt the workers wore
Blue-collar jobs
factory works and laborers, named after the denim work shirts they wore
Multinational Corporations
large corporations that operate both domestically and overseas
Franchise
a business given the authorization to market a company's goods or services in an area
