Materials Principles
Designers make informed choices regarding this to create the identity of a space. Depends heavily on the nature of the space.
Comfort and Functionality
Designers spend a great deal of time ensuring that the assets and materials that they choose for a particular job are appropriate and will meet the needs of the client
Aesthetics and Personality
Material selection plays a huge role in creating the identity of an interior space and is often used to reflect the personality of the user or owner of the space. Bold, vibrant, and unusual material selections tend to have more edge, while more elegant and restrained material choices tend to convey sophistication and timelessness
Easa of Maintenance and Durability
Different spaces have different requirements in terms of ease of this. An interior designer applying principles of human-centered design accounts for the necessity of this and chooses materials that will endure
Safety
This is particularly true of material choices. The materials chosen in a design must be non-toxic. Flooring must be tactile enough to prevent slipping, and walking spaces must be free of obstructions that might lead to tripping or falling
Acoustic Insulation
In some cases, furniture and carpets are enough to dampen sounds. In others, Interior designers must consider other measures like such as sound-absorbent panels or baffles
Thermal Insulation
Interior designers often conceive projects that require the construction of non-load-bearing walls. These wall require this jjust like any other wall, and this must be specifc in the interior designer's plan
Sustainability in Interior Design
An important consideration in interior design
- Utilizing materials that are environmentally friendly to manufacture or that are recycled
- Using energy efficient LED lighting
- Designing spaces that value air quality through effective air circulation and hte use of plants and other natural means of air filtering
- Working with locally available materials that reduce emissions from shipping and transportation
- Following LEED Certification guidelines
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification (LEED)
An important benchmark for designs focused on sustainability. Conferred on three levels, Silver, Gold, or Platinum, and is derived from a points system that factors in considerations like energy efficiency, water conservation, and environmentally responsible materials selection.
