Heat
the transfer of energy between objects that are different temperatures
Heat transfer
the movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
Energy transfer
the overall movement of energy between systems
Exothermic reaction
A reaction that releases energy into the surroundings, typically as heat or light
Endothermic reaction
A reaction that takes in energy from the surroundings
Temperature
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles within a substance, indicating how hot or cold something is.
Thermal energy
total amount of energy in an object/substance
Radiation
The transmission of energy in the form of waves through space or a material medium.
Convection
The transfer of heat by the movement of fluids (liquids or gases), where warmer, less dense fluid rises and cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a cycle.
Conduction
The process occurs between materials in contact, moving heat from a hotter to a cooler region until thermal equilibrium is reached.
List the three types of heat transfer. Give an example of each type of heat transfer.
Radiation: Visible light the sun emits
Convection: Heat in a classroom
Conduction: A handle of a cold metal spoon in a bowl of hot soup will warm up.
