Who was F.W Taylor?
Frederick Taylor was an American labourer from them 1880s. He became the chief engineer for his company. During that time he conducted experiments into how labour productivity could be increased.
Summarise Tylors theory
People are motivated by money. If you pay people more, they will be more effective.
Advantage of Taylors theory
Taylor based his research on factory workers, setting them targets and paying more money to the people who reached their targets. This worked well for Taylor's company, and many others secondary sector businesses.
Disadvantages of Taylors theory
This doesn't take into account that people care about more than just money.
Paying people more won't always make them work harder.
If a practical problem arises, such as a broken machine, you cannot easily measure people's output to know how to reward them.
