What is paper chromatography used for?
To separate the individual component colours out of inks/indicators
Give the procedure of paper chromatography
Using a dropper place a drop of ink 2cm up from the bottom of the chromatography paper on a pencil line drawn.
Place paper into beaker with 1cm3 of suitable eluent (water/methanol)
Leave for an hour
What is the result of this experiment?
As the eluent mobile phase moves up the chromatography paper, each component colour in the ink/indicator is selectively adsorbed and appears on the chromatography paper stationary phase at different times.
What is the mobile phase?
Liquid eluent/solvent
What is the stationary phase?
Chromatography paper
Name a suitable solvent for paper chromatography.
Water
If it is a water insoluble mixture an organic solvent is used : methanol
Why is the line drawn on the chromatography paper in pencil?
Avoids contaminating the results
Where should the pencil line be drawn?
2cm up the chromatography paper to avoid the solvent dissolving the ink before it moves up the paper
