Rachel Carson (p. 939)

American conservationist whose 1962 book “Silent Spring” galvanized the modern environmental movement that gained significant traction in the 1970s.

Gerald Ford (p. 947)

The first man to be made president solely by a vote of Congress after the resignations of President Nixon and Vice President Agnew; outraged Democrats by granting Nixon a complete pardon; lost to Carter in the 1976 election.

Howard Jarvis (p. 947)

A conservative activist launched the first successful tax revolt in California with Proposition 13, a referendum on the state ballot that greatly reduced property taxes.

Jimmy Carter (p. 949)

President of the United States who was a peanut farmer and former governor of Georgia, he defeated Gerald Ford in 1976. As President, he arranged the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel in 1978 but saw his foreign policy legacy tarnished by the Iranian Revolution and hostage crisis in 1979.

Phyllis Schlafly (p. 953)

A conservative female political activist. She stopped the ERA from being passed, seeing that it would hinder women more than it would help them. Affirmative Action. A policy designed to give special attention to or compensatory treatment for members of some previously disadvantaged group.

Harvey Milk (p. 956)

San Francisco camera shop owner. Ran as an openly gay candidate for city supervisor twice and the state assembly once, unsuccessfully. Won supervisor seat in 1977. Assassinated along with the city's mayor by a disgruntled former supervisor named Dan White.

Harvey Bernard Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay man to be elected into public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Billy Graham (p. 962)

William Franklin Graham Jr. was an American evangelist, an ordained Southern Baptist Minister, and a civil rights advocate whose broadcast and live sermons became well known internationally in the mid-to-late 20th century.
