Working Memory
A system for temporarily storing and managing information required to carry out complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension.
Cognitive Control
The ability to flexibly control thoughts and actions in accordance with our goals.
Sensory Memory
The immediate, initial recording of sensory information in the memory system.
Short-Term Memory (STM)
Activated memory that holds a few items briefly, such as the seven digits of a phone number while dialing, before the information is stored or forgotten.
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
The relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system. Includes knowledge, skills, and experiences.
Transient Memory
Short-lasting memory that lasts seconds or minutes.
Atkinson-Shiffrin Model
A memory model with sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
Sperling Task
A task to examine visual sensory memory using a partial report procedure.
Baddeley's Working Memory Model
A working memory model that contains a central executive, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad.
Central Executive
A component of working memory that manipulates the two memory buffers, manages work in short-term memory, and controls traffic to and from long-term memory.
Phonological Loop
An auditory memory maintained by internal speech rehearsal.
Visuospatial Sketchpad
A component of working memory that holds visual and spatial images for manipulation.
