• caesar assinated
  - had named his great-nephew (Octavian) as his son and hier

44 BC -April-May

• Octavian returns to Rome

• Begins to gather support from Caesars allies
  - positions himself as Caesars rightful heir

• Takes 700 million Sesertii from the treasury that was supposed to be used to fight the Parthians

44 BC - June

• Octavian meets with Mark Anthony, who refuses to recognise him as Caesars heir and refuses to give him his inheritance

• Octavian claims the tribute from the eastern province for himself

44 BC - July

• without imperium, Octavian raises his own army using his inheritanceand Caesar’s vetrans

• Octavian gains support of Senate
  - they see him as counter balance to Anthony’s power

• Octavian’s forces clashes with Anthony’s in a number of skirmishes

  - see him as way to limit Anthony

  - prepping for future confrontations with Antony

• Cicero persuades Senate to give Octavian rank of Pro-Praetor
  - given imperium
  - can Vote with consuls

• Battle of Forum Gallorum
  - Mark Antony beseiges Ceasars assasin Decimus Brutus in Mutina, defeating the forces of Consul Pansa.
  - Immediatley defeated by forces of teh other Consul Hirtus (dies a week later from his wounds)

43 BC - April 23

• Battle of Mutina
  - Antony defeated by cialition of Octavian, Decimus Brutus, and 2 consuls armies
  - Antony flees to Gaul

43 BC - June

• Octavian negotiates with senate for greater poitical power and recognition
  - rejected

43 BC - July

• Senate instructs Octavian to give his soldiers to Decimus Brutus
  - Octavian refuses

• Octavian assembles troops in Northern Italy
  - makes informal alliance with Antony against senate

• Octavian demands Consulship for him and his cousin
