Anxiety
A negative mood state characterized by bodily symptoms of physical tension and apprehension about the future.
Fear
An immediate alarm reaction to danger.
Panic Attack
Fear occurring at an inappropriate time, which can be either expected or unexpected.
Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS)
A limbic brain mechanism associated with anxiety, activated by perceived upcoming threats.
Fight/Flight System
A system associated with panic and fear, primarily driven by amygdala activity.
HPA-Axis
A central part of the body's stress response system, where CRF is implicated in anxiety.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Presence of obsessions, compulsions, or both, resulting in marked anxiety or distress.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Characterized by excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least 6 months.
Comorbidity
The co-occurrence of two or more disorders in a single individual, such as anxiety and depressive disorders.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A treatment approach that involves gradually exposing patients to their fears and anxieties.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
A condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, characterized by intrusive symptoms.
Metacognitive Theory
Suggests that individuals have both positive and negative beliefs about worrying, influencing their anxiety.
Intolerance for Uncertainty
A cognitive aspect of generalized anxiety disorder where individuals find uncertainty intolerable.
Maladaptive Assumptions
Beliefs that can lead to anxiety, such as assuming situations are unsafe until proven safe.
Expected Panic Attack
A panic attack that is anticipated in certain situations.
Unexpected Panic Attack
A panic attack that occurs without any clear trigger.
Exposure and Response Prevention
A treatment for OCD that involves exposure to anxiety-provoking stimuli and preventing the associated compulsive response.
CRF (Corticotropin-Releasing Factor)
A hormone implicated in the stress response and anxiety regulation.
