Sensory Registers
Mental representations of the senses that hold information for a very short time.
Short-term Memory (STM)
Also known as working memory, it is our conscious mental process that holds information for 20-30 seconds.
Primacy Effect
The tendency to remember stimuli presented earliest in a list.
Recency Effect
The tendency to remember stimuli that are presented most recently.
Encoding Specificity
Memory is best when learning and testing occur in similar physical and psychological contexts.
Implicit Memory
Memory that does not require conscious effort to recall, such as motor skills and habits.
Explicit Memory
Conscious representation of previously stored information, involving recall and recognition.
Procedural Memory
A type of long-term memory related to 'how to' knowledge, such as skills and habits.
Declarative Memory
Knowledge of facts and events that can be consciously recalled.
Iconic Storage
Visual representation in sensory registers held for less than one second.
Echoic Storage
Verbal representation in sensory registers held for less than four seconds.
Haptic Storage
Tactile representation in sensory registers held for less than two seconds.
