Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition
It ensures freedom of religion, speech, the press, peaceable assembly and petition. So you can say, write and believe in whatever you want. If there is issue with the government we have the right to change the government.
Right to bear arms
People have the right to safely bear arms (carry a weapon)
Quartering of Soldiers
Troops are not allowed to stay in a house without the owners permission
Search and Seizure
Your not allowed to search or confiscate anything without a warrant.
Grand jury, double jeopardy, self incrimination, due process
Grand jury: In a capital crime, a person does not have to answer unless formally accused by a grand jury
Double jeopardy: A person can’t be charged for the same crime twice.
Self incrimination: You can’t be a witness against yourself.
Due process: Every person has a right to know charges against them and participate in trial.
Right to speedy trial by jury, witnesses, counsel
A person accused of crime has a right to a defense lawyer, to a speedy and public trial, to hear charges, to call witnesses and to be present when witnesses speak in court
The legal system can’t keep someone in jail for years waiting for a trial date
Jury trial in civil lawsuits
For a case more than $20, a jury is needed to decide the case/right for a jury
Excessive fines, cruel and unusual punishment
The punishment must be reasonable, no excessive fine in a criminal trial and the punishment must fit the crime.
Non-enumerated rights retained by the people
The constitution is not a fortified list and the rights enumerated in the constitution are not a person’s only rights.
Rights reserved to states or people
Laws or prohibitions not made by the federal government or congress are left to be decided by state government as long as it does not interfere with federal law.
