Interphase
the cell replicates (doubles) its DNA and prepare for mitosis. the centrosome also divides.

Prophase
DNA condenses into individual distinct chromosomes; the nucleus (nuclear membrane) breaks down; centrosomes migrate to the poles, chromosomes are held together at the centromere, and the centrioles begin to form the spindle

Metaphase
some spindle fibers attach to and organize the chromosomes to line up on the equator of the cell. some spindle fibers span the cell

Anaphase
spindle fibers attached to chromosomes shorten (by enzymes), pulling the chromosomes apart. other spindle fibers lengthen, pushing the poles apart/ elongating the cell.

Telophase
two new nuclei form, a cleavage furrow forms across the midline of the parent cell, pinching it in two
in cell plants: cell plate

Cytokinesis
cells completely split; division of the cytoplasm. ends up with two separate daughter cells
