The Subject
With in the sentence it is the person or thing doing the action
Predicate
It is everything in the sentence excluding the subject
Noun phrase
A group of words that functions in a sentence as a subject or object, typically consisting of a noun and its modifiers
Verb phrase
A group of words that includes a verb and any direct or indirect objects, but does not include the subject
Adjectival phrase
A group of words that describes a noun in a sentence, typically including an adjective and any modifiers
Intransitive
a verb that does not require a direct object to complete its meaning
Intransitive
verbs that can stand alone in a sentence without needing a direct object
Transitive
a verb that requires a direct object to complete its meaning
Antecedent
a word or phrase that a pronoun refers back to in a sentence
Dependent clause
a group of words that contains a subject and a verb but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence
Independent clause
A group of words that contains a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as a complete sentence
Adverb phrase
a group of words that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb, typically indicating time, manner, place, or degree. It might question the degree of an affected object
Appositive phrase
a noun or noun phrase that renames or clarifies another noun, often set off by commas
Infinitive
the base form of a verb, usually preceded by "to," that can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb in a sentence
Preposition
a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence, often indicating direction, location, or time
Preposition phrase
a group of words that includes a preposition and a noun or pronoun, functioning as a single unit in a sentence
