What do NHSTs both have?
A type
A direction
Type
One sample: Used when we want to test a single group
Two sample: Used when we want to compare two groups. They can be either independent or paired:
Independent samples: Different people in each group (ex. comparing grades in KN 200 from Fall 2023 to Fall 2024)
Paired samples: Same people in each group (ex. comparing pre-test and post-test grades in KN 200 from this semester)
Direction
One-sided (we specify HA as being either greater than H0 or less than H0)
Two-sided (we specify HA as being different from H0—It could be less, or it could be more. We want to know if there’s a difference.
