Ordinary World
Hero is introduced. The hero is in their natural/home environment. A dilemma is in the hero’s life. Slight hamartia or fatal flaw of the hero is shown.
Call to Adventure
A situation stirs up from internal or external forces. The hero must choose if they want to take on the adventure or not.
Refusal of the Call
The hero refuses the call due to feelings of fear, unprepared, or expressing uncertainty and danger ahead
Meeting of the Mentor
The hero encounters someone who can give advice and ready them for their journey. The mentor has knowledge of the outside world. Mentor provides training
Crossing the Threshold
Hero commits to leaving the ordinary world. The mentor can lead the hero to the threshold but the hero must cross it alone. Threshold Guardian.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies
The hero explores the new and unknown world. Faces test and trials in unfamiliar setting. New characters are introduced both allies and enemies. The hero meets failure for the first time.
The Approach
The hero prepares for the major challenge in the special world. Along with allies
The Ordeal
Biggest test so far in the journey. Hero must face their fears
The Reward
After the biggest challenge, the hero is rewarded with an object or knowledge. The reward signals the hero to return to the ordinary world
The Road Back
Journey back to the ordinary world begins but the hero realizes that integrating back into their old life is challenging. The “reward” may be a new challenge within themselves.
The Resurrection
The hero is faced with a threshold going back to ordinary world. They come close to death but reaches a more complete level after overcoming it. Hero wakes up to a new world and transformed life.
The Return with the Elixir
Hero brings back knowledge or the “elixir” to the ordinary world and use it to help others. The true reward is the journey or transformation.
Villain
The one who creates problem or blocks the hero.
Damsel in Distress
A loved one who the hero cares for or must wait for their return.
Mentor
Wise guide who teaches the hero.
Outcast
Someone who lives apart from others but has wisdom.
Allies
Friends who help the hero on the journey.
The Prophet
A person who can see or predict the hero’s destiny.
Trickster
Character who teach lesson through mistakes or irony.
Gentle Giant
Strong on the outside, soft on the inside
The Scholar
A thinker who values learning a knowledge.
Threshold Guardian
Someone or something that tests the hero’s courage.
Herald
Brings the call to adventure or a message of change.
Star-Crossed Lovers
Lovers kept apart by fate or challenge.
