What are IONS?
Atoms or groups of atoms with a positive or negative charge.
Taking away an Electron from an atom gives it?
Positive charge
Adding an Electron to an atom gives it?
Negative charge
What is a Cation?
Forms when an atom loses one or more electrons and therefore has an overall positive charge.
What is an Anion?
Forms when an atom gains one or more electrons and therefore has an overall negative charge.
What elements form Cations?
Metal Elements will lose Electrons to become stable, positively charged by the number of electrons lost.
What elements form Anions?
Non-metal Elements will gain Electrons to become stable, negatively charged by the number of electrons gained.
What are Ionic Compounds?
They are made of metals bonded to nonmetals where all charges MUST be cancelled out.
