sclera
white part of the eye
cornea
the transparent, dome-shaped outer layer of the eye. located in the front of the eye. covers pupil and iris
choroid
located between the retina and the sclera. rich in oxygen and nutrients because of the blood vessels it carries.
ciliary body
makes aqueous fluid and changes the shape of the lens while eye is focusing. located between cornea and iris
iris
ring of smooth muscle between cornea and lens that contracts and expands the size of the pupil. iris controls the amount of light the eye takes in
pupil
allows light into the eye
suspensor ligament
halo of fibers encircling and holding up the lens
retina
inner layer .
TWO LAYERS:
outer pigmented layer= pigment cells that help absorb light, so it doesn’t scatter
inner neural layer= has tons of neurons and neuroglia which help create pathways for light
optic nerve
Millions of photoreceptors that convert light energy to AP travels through the optic nerve to the thalamus and visual cortex of the brain.
fovea centralis
gives us our sharpest and clearest vision
optic disc
where the optic nerve exits the eye
rods
register black and white
cones
detect fine detail and color
lens
the convex transparent disc that focuses the light that is allowed in and projects it onto the retina in the inner layer
vitreous humor
the clear gel that fills the posterior area of the eye that is behind the lens
aqueous humor
clear fluid that fills the anterior section that is in front of the lens
odor
the gaseous molecules we smell
olfactory epithelium
where molecules make contract with the roof of the nasal cavity which has olfactory sensory neurons. nose hairs filter out some of the molecules
taste buds
the sensory organ of taste
papillae
bumps on your tongue, also where taste buds are located inside
gustatory epithelial cells
taste receptor cells
basal epithelial cells
stem cells that make new gustatory epithelial cells
