Sensory Receptors
Specialized cells or structures that respond to specific types of physical energy and convey information to the brain.
Adaptation
The process by which a sensory system becomes insensitive to a continuing source of stimulation.
Blind Spot
The area of the retina where the optic disc is located, devoid of photoreceptors, leading to an absence of vision in that spot.
Accommodation
The ability of the eye to change focus for near or far vision by altering the shape of the lens.
Color Blindness
A deficiency in the ability to perceive colors accurately, which can result from the absence or malfunction of color-sensing cones in the retina.
Proprioception
The sense of body position and movement, arising from receptors in muscles and joints.
Thermoception
The sense of heat and cold, involving receptors that respond to temperature changes.
Equilibrioception
The perception of balance, governed by the vestibular system in the inner ear.
Tactition
The sense of touch, which includes the perception of pressure, temperature, and vibration.
Nociceptors
Sensory receptors that respond to pain, generally not adapting, allowing continued perception of harmful stimuli.
