Feudal System
A system where the king owns all the land and grants it to loyal followers known as Lords in exchange for loyalty and services.
Manor
The land given by a Lord to a knight for protection, often used for farming and living.
Castle Defenses
Defensive features of castles in the Middle Ages including moats, curtain walls, drawbridges, gatehouses, turrets, and battlements to protect against attacks.
Keep
The main building in a castle where the Lord's apartments, Great Hall, and Chapel were located, often with narrow windows for warmth and defense.
Bailey
The courtyard around the keep where stables, workshops, kitchens, wells, and soldiers' horses were situated.
Lord's Duties
Responsibilities of the Lord in organizing the castle's business, maintaining control over the territory, carrying out the King's orders, fighting for the King, and settling disputes.
Hawking
A type of hunting using birds of prey to catch small animals, enjoyed by the Lord of the castle.
Jousting Tournaments
Competitions involving knights on horseback running at each other with lances, aiming to knock the opponent off their horse, often enjoyed by the Lord.
Feasts in Great Hall
Large gatherings held in the Great Hall of the castle, known as banquets, with entertainment from minstrels and jesters, and preserved meats served on trenchers.
