Life of a lord
Under the feudal system the king owned all the land.. they granted land to loyal followers called the Lords. The Lord swore an oath of loyalty And in return got a piece of land called The Thief. The Lord then gave the land to the knight who swore to protect the Lord and king at all costs. The land the Lord gave a knight was called a manor. The knight then gave some of their land to peasants for farming.
During the Middle Ages Lords lived in castles. the castles had many defensive features such as a mote surrounding the castle a curtain wall surrounding the castle a drawbridge to pull up if intruders arrived a gatehouse which was in charge of the portcullis and who went in and out turds for 9th to keep lookout in and battlements which were pathways along the edge of the wall for the nights to patrol. there was also arrow slits at the top of all the walls for the four nights to hide behind and then shoot their arrows out of the gap and hide again these defences were used to defend against other kingdoms attacking. they often held a siege on the castle and will use a battering ram catapult and cannon to breach the walls.
The main building was the keep. This is where the Lords apartments,. The Great Hall and the Chapel were. there were narrow windows to keep the keep as warm as possible and to make defence easier. There were dungeons below the keep where people who broke the Lords rules were put. sometimes if the crime someone did was horrible it was punished by death. The courtyard around the keep was called the Bailey. this is where the stables, workshops, kitchens well and soldiers horses were placed
The duties of the Lord included organising the business of the castle, keeping his territory under control and carrying out the King’s wishes. The Lord had to fight for the king and also helped him rule the country. The Lord often have to go to the King's court when called and had his own court to settle disputes in his land.
the Lord of the castle enjoyed hunting, Hawking (a type of hunting using birds of prey to catch small animals) chess, jousting tournaments(involved knights on horseback running at each other with Lance’s aiming to knock the other one off their horse) and drinking. He often hunted right before a feast and they would eat the meat he found during the feast.
Great feasts were held in the Great Hall. the feasts were always very big and were often referred to as a banquet. The Great Hall often had two massive fireplaces with tapestries on the walls and a big table in the centre of the room.. since they had no freezers in mediaeval times away they kept their meats preserved with salting. other ways were smoking drying and curing. they were served food on trenchers (A hard pics of bread.). During the feasts they were provided with entertainment from minstrels(musicians) and jesters(clowns)
