Phosphagen system
An energy system that provides immediate ATP through the breakdown of stored creatine phosphate.
Glycolytic system
An energy system that breaks down glucose for ATP production, primarily during high-intensity activities.
Oxidative system
An energy system that produces ATP through aerobic metabolism, primarily during low to moderate intensity exercise.
VO2max
Maximal oxygen consumption; a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen the body can utilize during intense exercise.
Homeostasis
The process by which biological systems maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions.
Thermoregulation
The process of maintaining an optimal core body temperature through various physiological responses.
Epinephrine
A hormone that increases heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, often in response to stress.
Insulin
A hormone that regulates blood sugar levels by facilitating glucose uptake into cells.
Cardiac drift
A phenomenon where heart rate increases during prolonged exercise at a constant intensity due to dehydration or temperature rise.
Proprioceptors
Specialized sensory receptors that provide information about body position and movement.
