Topographic Map
A map that uses contour lines and symbols to represent the terrain and elevations, typically showing 20 m intervals.
Orthographic Map
A type of map that can be in black, white, or color, employs 5 m intervals and includes selected symbols, operating at a larger scale (1:10,000) for more detail.
Conventional Symbols
Symbols used on maps to represent specific features, which may be presented in a key; includes symbols for water, vegetation, and man-made features.
Scale
A ratio that indicates the relationship between distance on the map and actual distance on the ground; a smaller scale covers a larger area with less detail.
Direction Abbreviations
The abbreviated forms for cardinal and ordinal directions, including N (North), S (South), E (East), W (West) and their combinations like NE (Northeast).
Distance Calculation on Maps
A method to determine actual distance by measuring the length between points on the map and converting it using scale factors, e.g., 1 cm on a topographic map equals 500 m.
