What is an amphoteric substance?
A substance that can act as either an acid or a base.
What is a Lewis acid?
A substance that can accept a pair of electrons to form a covalent bond.
What is a Lewis base?
A substance that can donate a pair of electrons to form a covalent bond.
What is autoionization of water?
The self-ionization reaction where water produces ions.
How is the equilibrium constant (K) calculated?
Products over reactants, excluding solids and liquids.
What is acid-base strength?
Measure of the dissociation of an acid or base.
What does it mean for an acid or base to be strong?
Dissociates 100% in solution.
What does it mean for an acid or base to be weak?
Partially dissociates in solution.
What is a neutralization reaction?
Reaction of an acid and base to form salt and water.
What is titration?
A lab technique to find the concentration of an unknown solution using a known solution.
What is the equivalence point?
The point in a titration when the moles of acid equal the moles of base.
What is the end point?
When the indicator changes colors, signifying the end of the titration.
What are salts?
Ionic compounds that can be split apart by water.
What is a buffer solution?
Solution that resists changes in pH.
