what is a case study?

a detailed study on a small sample

what are the advantages and disadvantages of a case study?

advantage: it is detailed, in depth data and it is valid

disadvantage: expensive, time consuming and it is not representative

what is participant observation?

where the participant does not know they are being watched and the researcher observes while taking part/ engaging

what are the advantages and disadvantages of participant observation?

advantage: gives better understanding as your abler to gain insight

disadvantage: can lead to bias/ going native

what is non-participant observation?

where the researcher observes but does not join in/ engage

what are the advantages and disadvantages of non-participant observation?

advantage: it is easier to record data and remain objective

disadvantage: not able to gain the same level of insight and understanding

what is covert observation?

when the participant is unaware that they are being watched and has not given consent

what are the advantages and disadvantages of covert observation?

advantage: natural behaviour is being observed and it is valid

disadvantage: unethical because the participant hasn't given consent

what is overt observation?

the participant is aware that they are being watched and have given consent

what are the advantages and disadvantages of overt observation?

advantage: avoids ethical issues of deception and lack of consent

disadvantage: the participants may not show natural behaviour

what is ethnocerimism?
