Verifying controlled substance prescription content and DEA number

Step 1

Check patient info: name, address, and date of birth

Step 2

Check Prescriber info: Name, address, telephone number, license number

Step 3

DEA number process:

1. Check that the 2 letter corresponds to the first letter of the providers last name
2. Add 1,3,5 digits together
3. Add 2,4,6 digit together and double it
4. Add steps 2 and 3 together
5. Check that the last digit of your sum matches the last digit of the DEA number

Step 4

When was it prescribed? (dd,mm,yyyy)

Step 5

Check drug name and strength(mg)

Step 6

Check dose of drug and quantity

Step 7

Check how the medication will be taken (via mouth/syringe)

Step 8

Check for directions(how to take it, how many times)

Step 9

check number of refills allowed

Step 10

check if product selection allowed

Step 11

Check for prescribers signature

Step 12

Check for any dangerous abbreviations
