Superficial, think layer of the dermis; top 1/5 of the dermis

Deeper, thick layer of the dermis; bottom 4/5 of dermis

Bumps that blind the epidermis and dermis

Meissner’s corpuscles

Sense light touch

Capillary loops

Where oxygen and nutrients are dropped off in the dermis

Free nerve ending

Sense pain, heat, cold, itching, tickling

Hair follicle

Tunnel where the hair grows

Arrector pili muscle

Contracts to raise hair on end

Sebaceous glands

Oil glands

Sudoriferous glands

Sweat gland

Pacinian corpuscle

Sense heavy touch (pressure and vibrations)

Hypodermics

Subcutaneous layer

Adipose tissue

Adheres to skin to underlying muscle; insulates heat; absorbs shock

Sensory nerve

Send messages from the Merkle cells, meissner’s corpuscle, free nerve endings, and Pacinian corpuscles to the brain

Motor Nerve

Send messages from the brain to the arrector pili muscles, sebaceous glands, and Sudoriferous glands

Blood vessels

Delivers blood to and from skin

Artery

Drops off blood with oxygen and nutrients

Vein

Takes away blood with CO2 and waste
