New Netherland
A Dutch settlement in the New World; relied on trade; welcomed all people; later seized by the English and renamed New York.

The English renamed and controlled the former Dutch settlement of New Netherland after its takeover.
Triangular trade
A three-way trading network among North/South America, Europe, and Africa.
Middle Passage
The leg of the triangular trade in which enslaved Africans were transported to the Americas.
Chattel slavery
A system where people are treated as property for life; enslaved people faced cultural erasure and forced assimilation (language and religion).
Cultural erasure
Loss of enslaved people’s language, traditions, and identity due to slavery.
Oral history
The passing down of histories and traditions orally, often secretly by enslaved communities.
Matrilineal slavery
A system where lineage or inheritance is traced through the mother; in slavery, status could be linked to the enslaved mother.
Bacon’s Rebellion (1676)
A rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon against Native American lands; exposed tensions between Black and White laborers and led to laws favoring whites.
Slave codes
Laws restricting enslaved people’s rights, including restrictions on literacy and who could possess weapons.
Stono Rebellion (1739)
A major slave uprising in South Carolina where enslaved people attempted to arm themselves and revolt against white masters.
Indentured servitude
Labor under a fixed-term contract; common in colonies and involved both Black and White workers, influencing the shift toward racialized slavery.
