What hormones are used in fertility drugs and what do they do?
FSH and LH are used; they stimulate the maturation and release of eggs.
How does In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) work?
The mother is given FSH and LH to encourage egg maturation. Eggs are extracted, fertilised in the lab with sperm, and then embryos are inserted into the uterus.
What is one benefit of fertility drugs or IVF?
They provide a way for an infertile couple to have a child.
What are two physical drawbacks of IVF?
It is physically stressful and can cause reactions to hormones such as feeling sick. It can also lead to multiple births, which may risk the mother and babies.
What is one emotional drawback of IVF?
It can be emotionally stressful because success rates are low (around 26%).
What is one financial drawback of IVF?
It can be expensive, especially if the process has to be repeated.
